Tourism that Makes a Difference
For visitors to Vilankulo, ParCo links you with three community led tourism experiences - to give back and have fun at the same time.
snorkeling with seahorses
A traditional dhow takes you to the seagrasses in the bay where you wade with the seahorses in their natural habitat. The tour includes lunch and a contribution to the seahorse protection fund. This tour is part of ongoing efforts to end seahorse poaching in the area. The activity is $40 per person or 2,500MZN. See the schedule below to select a day and call Juliet to make a booking, +258 845774462
On weekday mornings between 8:30 and 11:00, guests can visit a community-run preschool that is supported by the Bonguile project (a partnership between ParCo and Bahia Mar). You can play, read and share with around 40 three to five year olds. A $20 minimum donation to the preschool is suggested. Additionally, if you would like to donate supplies from your home country, check out Pack for a Purpose. Simple picture and story books are the best!
Market and meal tour
The Bairro Desse Child Protection has some of the most talented “mamas” around when it comes to making crab matapa, or fish peanut curry. When you eat with a family on their estera (grass mat), filling-up on the local food rich with crushed leaves, coconut milk, peanut power and seafood, you may just realize why you ended up in Mozambique. The lunch also includes a tour of the open air market where you will see the produce you are about to eat in its raw form. The tour/meal is $15 or 900mt per person include transport within town. 50% of your payment is a donation to the “child in crisis fund” managed by the Child Protection Committee of Bairro Desse. Booking must be done at least one day in advance.
